Auto updating digital picture frame

I turned an old Thinkpad 600e into a photo frame a couple of years ago.Biggest expense was getting a nice wooden frame to mount everything in, so it looked nice.

I'm looking to throw together an ultra-thin, programmable, "display" that's sufficiently light weight so as to be wall-mountable.

Think digital picture frame, but a proper (very low power) computer.

A Raspberry Pi hidden inside the TV connects to the internet and automatically updates the pictures when the Flickr album is modified.

Materials: Since there are already plenty of good guides for setting up a Raspberry Pi, I won't go into the details here.

However, shell scripts (files) containing terminal commands can be run from python code.

I wrote two scripts - one for running the slideshow and one for closing it - and saved them both in the directory /home/pi/bin.

Feh is run directly from the terminal window, so you can test if it is working pretty easily.

Since feh is run in the terminal, the slideshow itself can't be directly run from within the python code.

Took the surround off the screen and laid it on the back of the laptop, facing out. Without USB support, the only way to copy photos on is via rewritable CD.

Used Free DOS as the operating system, plus a simple slideshow app I found online. Even though the display is only 256 colours, it's good enough. Instead of the photos being locked away in a folder and seldom, if ever, viewed, the photos on the frame get . A bit of a PITA - having it on the network (wired would do, wireless would be better) would be much easier. I'm worried about the hard drive possibly not spinning up next time it gets power cycled.

It'd be great if I could just stick some components together (or buy it pre-assembled) but I have no objection to breaking out a soldering iron if need be. I took the screen off the hinge and turned it around, if it were a tablet.
